cvc-filter-regulator-lubricatorMaintaining and caring for the quality of the compressed air is arguably one of the most important tasks facing pneumatic system owners. High quality compressed air will ensure long and efficient work of all pneumatic system elements like pneumatic railcar hopper vibrators, air tools, air cylinders, or valves. Efficient system operation also means efficient energy management because the air compressor doesn’t have to switch on as often. On the other hand not enough care in preparing the compressed air can cause damage to piping and system elements, which can be the source of other resulting problems: air pressure drops, the need for servicing or even replacing vibrators and other tools, and even suspensions in the operation of the pneumatic system.

We cannot stress this enough: clean, better compressed air will save you money in the long run.

There are three main components in compressed air preparation:

  • Filtration – filters remove dust, debris, oil, water and other dangerous particles from compressed air’s supply line. There are many types of filters, and sometimes several should be used in pneumatic system – one directly after compressor (so called pre-filter), then a fine filter, others optionally before final elements (final filters). Everything depends on specifics of pneumatic system, and its application. Some applications (like food packaging) have much more strict requirements.  For railcar vibrator applications, we recommend the use of a filter within 10-20 feet of the vibrator.
  • Regulation – regulating the air pressure to proper levels (20 – 80 PSI) prevents damage to the railcar vibrator and leads to the most efficient use of air consumption.  High levels of pressure can easily break internal components of vibrators and other air tools; this can cause very dangerous problems which can lead to employee injury or even death.  In order to successfully maintain pressure at certain levels you need a pressure regulator.
  • Lubrication – pneumatic hopper railcar vibrators and air tools require lubricated air for smooth, efficient operation.  Lubricators are used just for that – they add tiny drops of oil into compressed air to protect vibrators and tools from corrosion, which ultimately reduces friction in internal parts. This in effect extends the operational lifetime of the tool or vibrator while maintaining its performance parameters.
